About
Max & Riley is a labor of love. Many people ask where the name came from. Max was the first pet for Ali and Hope as little girls. Max was a Maltese and was the most wonderful dog. He loved to snuggle with everyone he met. Then came Riley, the most amazing Malti-poo. He loved to be in front of any window to survey the neighborhood. He was the most loving, protective, and beautiful little guy. After Riley, it took a year to think about another dog.
They found the most beautiful amazing puppy at a local SPCA, named her Scarlet, and she’s been a part of the family ever since. You will see her on the website as the face of Scarlet’s Shop, our home and gifting shop within a shop. She loves to model on our social media and our photoshoots. This is a family business in every sense. Susan’s granddaughter and Hope’s niece loves to help with buying trips and choosing dresses. Susan’s grandson and Hope’s nephew used to take naps in the dressing room and play trains in the Newbury St and Andover locations when he was a baby. They are all animal lovers and HSUS members, which will reflect in the designers and clothes they have chosen in their store (fur-free).
They are always here to answer any questions or help choose styles for your upcoming events.
Meet The Founders
Susan and Hope are a mother-daughter team of fashion lovers. After college in the early 80’s, Susan (mother) started her career in retailing as an accessories manager at Macy’s, and went on to work in suburban Philadelphia at Saks Fifth Avenue in the accessories department. After meeting her future husband Philippe, the love of her life, she moved to Paris where he was born and raised. After several years, they moved back to the U.S., and she had to put her fashion dreams on hold to be a stay at home mother for their two daughters, Ali and Hope. Susan shared her love of fashion with Hope who always loved fashion. While she attended college, Hope became involved in Teen Vogue Fashion University and Susan and Hope began attending NYFW, and decided they would eventually open their own store together.
At a runway show during New York Fashion Week, Hope met the incredible Erika Bearman, better known as Oscar PR Girl, the SVP of Global Communications at Oscar de la Renta. Erika then invited Hope to join the PR team as an intern. Throughout her internship, Hope worked as a display intern at Anthropologie and then in sales at her favorite NY store Henri Bendel. The family, wanting to be closer to Ali, who moved to Boston, decided to pursue their dream of opening their store. Susan and Hope found a charming, storefront on the lovely Newbury Street. Now, after covid, they have decided to be exclusively online, while offering private appointments in their private showroom. They are looking to open pop up shops around the area so message us if you want a popup shop to come to your town!
